To meet the needs of Catholics living in Devonshire and Smith’s, land was donated to build a chapel, which was blessed in February 1948 and named the Wayside Chapel. Over time it became too small for the needs of the people in the area and the parish. In 1964, the Church purchased the land where the present St. Patrick’s Church stands. St. Patrick’s Church was built and formally blessed by the late Bishop Bernard Murphy, CR on the 26th October 1969.

Deacon Matthew was born on 3rd December 1953, in Zimbabwe, Africa. He arrived in Bermuda in early 1987, to work as a Consultant Anesthesiologist and Intensive Care Specialist; he is now retired. He is married to Elizabeth and is the proud father of Kate (Deneys) and Nicola (Jon), and has two grandchildren. He was ordained as Deacon in Bermuda on 30th January 2016 at St. Theresa's Cathedral.
